What is nail surgery?

Toenail surgery is a medical procedure involving the surgical treatment of issues affecting the toenails. There are several conditions that may mean you require toenail surgery, and  specific treatment can vary based on the underlying problem. Here are some common reasons for toenail surgery:

1. Ingrown toenails

This is a condition where the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and swelling. In toenail surgery for ingrown nails, the portion of the nail that is ingrown may be removed, and in some cases, a part of the nail bed may be extracted to prevent regrowth.

2. Fungal nail infections

For some cases of stubborn fungal nail infections that are not responding to regular treatments, a total nail avulsion (removing the entire nail) might be performed.

3. Trauma or injury

If a toenail is severely damaged due to trauma or injury, surgical procedures may be necessary to repair or remove the damaged nail and promote proper healing of the toe.

4. Chronic or recurrent infections

In cases where toenail infections are persistent or keep recurring, surgery may be considered to remove the affected nail or part of the nail to eliminate the source of the infection.

5. Abnormal nail growth

Some individuals may experience abnormal toenail growth due to genetic factors or other underlying health conditions. Surgical procedures may be employed to correct these growth abnormalities.

Toenail surgeries are typically performed by podiatrists or foot specialists. The specific procedure will depend on the nature and severity of the issue. Before undergoing toenail surgery, patients will usually have a consultation with the podiatrist to discuss the problem, explore non-surgical options, and determine the most appropriate course of action.abnormalities.

Recovery from toenail surgery varies, and it's important for patients to follow post-operative care instructions provided by their healthcare provider to ensure proper healing and prevent complications.
